Pik-ke Carnival – Let’s Get Ready for Safety! Taipei City Fire Department Teams Up with Houzhan Wholesale District to Promote Disaster Awareness
To strengthen public awareness of disaster prevention and fire safety, the Taipei City Fire Department and the Houzhan Wholesale Business Association, will host the “Pik-ke Disaster Preparedness Carnival” on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Taiyuan Plaza, Datong District (near Exit Y13 of the Taipei Underground Mall). The event, held in conjunction with the 17th Pik-ke Festival, offered interactive games and hands-on learning experiences that promote correct disaster preparedness concepts and build a culture of disaster resilience. Located near Taipei Main Station, Taiyuan Plaza is a major hub for wholesale traders traveling between northern and southern Taiwan, as well as a popular gathering spot for daily shopping and social exchange. By hosting the event in this familiar public space, the Fire Department aims to engage residents through diverse educational booths such as “Home Safety Essentials,” “Residential Fire Safety,” “Gas Stove and LPG Safety,” “C-Ha Learning Corner,” “Little Firefighters,” and “Disaster Preparedness Practice Zone.” Participants will have the opportunity to experience fire safety drills, learn how to operate fire extinguishers, practice evacuation skills, and understand key principles of electrical fire prevention—helping to make disaster preparedness part of everyday life. As the autumn and winter seasons approach, the Fire Department reminds the public to follow the “5 Don’ts and 1 Must” principle when using electric heaters, extension cords, and other electrical appliances: Don’t overload circuits; don’t bundle cords; don’t leave unused plugs inserted; don’t use damaged plugs; don’t place combustibles near electrical devices; and always choose appliances with a safety certification label. When cooking, always practice the “Turn Off the Flame When You Leave” habit. If you must step away, turn off the stove to prevent unattended fires caused by dry boiling, spillover, or gas leakage that could lead to fire incidents. The Fire Department also encourages citizens to download the “Taipei City Disaster Preparedness App”, which provides real-time weather alerts, disaster updates, and evacuation guidance—helping enhance home safety and community resilience. The Taipei City Fire Department expressed gratitude to citizens for their long-term support of disaster prevention education, noting that the concept of “prevention is better than rescue, and avoidance is better than prevention” has deeply taken root in the community. Moving forward, the department will continue to collaborate with local communities and civic groups to promote disaster prevention awareness, building a sustainable, safe, and resilient Taipei City.
