The Taiwan Geographic Information Society held the 21st Golden Map Awards Ceremony on July 9, 2025, at National Central University, recognizing individuals, contributors, or products that have demonstrated excellence and innovation in the field of Geographic Information Systems. The New Construction Office of the Taipei City Government's Public Works Department received the “Application System Award” for its project “Road and Sidewalk Visualized Management Platform.” This marks the third accolade for the project, following the “Engineering Digital Innovation Application Award” from the Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering in 2023 and the “Innovation Award - Excellence” in the Taipei City Government’s 2024 Creative Proposal Competition.

The New Construction Office noted that establishing a comprehensive database of roads and sidewalks serves as the foundation for effective management. However, traditional manual survey methods result in two-dimensional maps that are time-consuming to produce, inconsistent in quality, less accurate, and limited to single-use outcomes. To address the challenges posed by these conventional methods, the office pursued innovative solutions by exploring the use of smart panoramic inspection vehicles for data collection. In addition, geospatial information is integrated with real-world street view imagery to create a visualized management platform. A pilot project was first carried out in Taipei’s Xinyi District in 2019 through a scientific research initiative, and formal application citywide began in 2023—the first of its kind in the country

The New Construction Office also noted that the visualized management platform not only reduces manpower and time costs but also enables smart management by providing real-time monitoring of various deficiencies and improvements related to roads and sidewalks. The platform’s “Accessible Pathway Map” is also underway, which will also be made available for public viewing in the future. In addition, the platform introduces evaluation indicators for sidewalks (including accessibility, safety, and comfort). The evaluation scores are displayed using color-coded zones on the platform to assist government agencies in decision-making and to serve as a basis for prioritizing improvement efforts.

The New Construction Office concluded by emphasizing that roads and sidewalks are vital components of public infrastructure, and their long-term, effective management and maintenance remain a key objective. Moving forward, the office plans to promote inter-departmental collaboration and resource sharing to further enrich and diversify the platform’s data. It will also guide road inspection contractors in integrating imaging equipment to capture street view imagery during routine inspections, ensuring continuous updates to the platform’s map data and supporting the goal of data sustainability. Upholding the principles of innovation, technological advancement, and sustainability, the New Construction Office is committed to creating a more comfortable, safe, and friendly road environment in Taipei.
